Morning Work Freebie

January 8, 2012

Okay, I know what you’re thinking, “I already have a morning work system in place.” Well, I always think I do and then, come to find out, it’s not working too well. I used to always have a worksheet in place every day until I stumbled on The Teacher Wife’s great morning book.
We did this most of the first semester and it was so incredibly easy.

Well, since we don’t do any reading worksheets at all, I felt like my kids weren’t getting any practice doing independent work using our weekly skills. So, after flip-flopping back and forth, I’ve decided to create a morning sheet for each day that goes along with our topic for the week. Now, I know this is an ambitious goal, considering I’ve not gone seen my students since before Christmas. We’ll see how this goes when we go back but I have a packet ready for you to download. I would love it if you could use it in your classroom too.
If you already have your morning work system set up,  this sheets could be used for homework or just extra review.
I know not all of you use Treasures or even teach 2nd grade so I tried to make the pages more generic so they could be used by everyone. I even created them in color and black and white.
If you do use Treasures, this packet goes along with “Splish! Splash! Animal Baths.” The skills covered are: compare and contrast, nouns, linking verbs, creative writing, capitalization, and word categories.

I changed it from TPT because I forgot I used DJ Inkers clip art.  I will be posting these on Google Docs.

  1. Courtney, this is INCREDIBLE! 🙂 Thank you soooo much. You are such talented teacher and I have been very inspired by your blog this year 🙂 I will be downloading this to use with my 2nd graders 🙂 I've tried something similar this year, but I really like the way you have set up your morning work 🙂 If you have time, I would be honored if you would check out our new blog 🙂

  2. Thanks so much! Morning work has been a struggle this year since so many of my kids come in late because they go to our breakfast program and about five of my kids never even get to morning work. It's frustrating!

I also use Treasures, so I love all your Treasures resources. You're usually a few weeks ahead of me, so that's great for planning! 🙂 I've posted a couple of leveled reader activities recently if you'd like to check them out!

  5. I am moving from 3rd grade to 2nd grade this year so these are wonderful! Thanks for putting them together. Do you also have morning work packets for the first half of the Treasures series?
    Thanks! Rachel

    1. Hi Rachel! I have the morning work in my Treasures packs for each story. These can be found in my TPT store or TN store. Good luck with your move!
