Schwa Song and a Reminder

February 28, 2012

We are learning about the schwa sound this week. Besides it being fun to say “schwa,” this is the most common sound in the English language. I had no idea about that until I was searching for songs to teach the sound. Well, despite it being common, there is nothing really to help teach the sound.  Today, when I was teaching reading groups, a song just came to me and I hurried and scribbled it down on a notepad. The note was dark pink and I only had an orange pen so it was incredibly hard to read when I tried later on during the day. The song is a freebie in my TPT store so feel free to grab a copy. I would love to hear how you teach the schwa sound in your classroom and what you think of the song.

Just a reminder that I will be having a sale in my TPT store on leap day February 29th. Everything in my store will be 20% off including my top selling common core standards posters for K-2.

My friend Hilary at Rockin Teacher Materials is also having a sale. You have to check out her Math Mysteries. They are adorable and I have a few and will be buying more on Wednesday.

This is her most recent product and I know she is working on a 2nd grade version.

    1. It is very tricky! I explained it today and they looked at me like I was speaking a different language but we had fun saying "schwa." So glad that you like it!

    1. Hey Hilary! I tried to comment on your first post I guess and it would never let me. Thanks for the shout out on your blog. I'll check out your new post ASAP.

  1. I'm sorry to be such a downer after all these awesome posts, but I found a mistake in your "Ugly Vegetables" treasures packet that is pretty major. In the game for the story, the questions go from 6 to 13. Questions 7-12 were left out. Just wanted to give you a heads up.

I love your packets and use them every week and my kids LOVE your games! It has made teaching so much more enjoyable! Thank you so much for taking the time to do these.

    1. Hi! I actually already fixed it and uploaded it again to TPT and Teacher's Notebook. You will just need to download it again. Thanks for letting me know!

  2. Thanks for the schwa song – someone earlier said it was tricky for thei kiddos – ha! It's tricky for me! I'll enjoy singing it when we get there in a couple weeks. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Loved singing the song and it helped me understand the swchaa, but just wondering why would you teach it to kids? It does not appear to be a CCSS and knowing it doesn't help their reading, writing or spelling.
