Mix of March literacy centers

I got a bit ahead on my centers for next month because of our ice day on Friday. I always like to have plenty of time to get them printed, laminated, and cut out because I have done it all at the last minute way too many times.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

Five for Friday

It's time for Five for Friday.
I spent some of Sunday and Monday printing and laminating my Valentine's centers. It's good to get a little bit ahead!

I've been trying to organize my house and I found this great solution for cleaning products. I got a shower rod with springs that is sturdy and I am using it to hang the bottles with handles. It freed up quite a bit of space.

I was craving chocolate this week so I made a chocolate cake in the microwave. Have you ever done this? It's so easy and it actually turns out really moist. I have a Pampered Chef deep covered baker that works great. You just combine all your cake ingredients like normal and put little spoonfuls of icing on top of the batter. It cooks for around 10 minutes and you have a great cake.

I found something new that I love. I'm from the South so I love tea. I think you have to if you are from the South. I just hate making tea. I can never get it to taste like my mom's. I don't like my tea very sweet and I can never get the right amount of sweetness. I found Honst tea (love the name) at a few local supermarkets. This flavor wasn't my favorite but I've loved all the others. I've also got a lemonade one that I haven't tried yet. I really loved the Black Forest Berry and the Peach White Tea. I've got several others to try. Best of all, it's organic and very low in calories because it's not very sweet.

We had an ice storm today so no school. That's two Fridays in a row that we've been off.  It was nice because we knew last night that we wouldn't have school today. I have a meeting on Monday so I had to get ready for a sub. It was a little rushed getting things ready but I feel so much better since I did.
If you can tell from the picture, we had quite a bit of ice. This is a chair on my porch that is completely covered in ice. It was a treacherous day to be on the roads so I've just stayed home and relaxed.

Have a great weekend friends!

Flashback Post: Polar Bears

Since I have quite a few new followers, I thought I would lead you to a popular post from last year. This time of year, I love teaching about polar bears. The kids love them and they are so engaged in the lessons.
Last year, I did a week's worth of polar bear activities. I am going to try to jam that into the rest of this week but I may have to carry over into next week, mostly because I get a little carried away.

I love looking for books at the public library. They found some great ones to really extend my polar bear unit. I found these next two at the library.

I have this book in my classroom library. Love it!

My kids were fascinated by Knut last year. This book has lots of words but the photographs are great!

We started off our unit by listing our polar bear schema. After we had read several books about polar bears, we revisited the facts the kids wrote and moved some to misconceptions. We also did this Polar Bear map and you can find it free on my original post. Click the image above to grab a copy.
This was one of my favorite crafts from last year. They turned out so cute. I had the kids write facts about polar bears (hello informational writing!) and we made the writing paper into a polar bear. I have these templates available for free too on my original post. Hope this helps you with your planning!

Rock On (rocks and minerals unit)

This has been a crazy week. It rained from Sunday afternoon almost nonstop until Wednesday. I heard that we ended up getting around 7 inches of rain. I kept looking for Noah and his ark. On Thursday, we got out of school an hour early because of impending winter weather. Luckily, we did. It started sleeting and snowing on my drive home. By the time I was home, it was all over the road. Because of the rain, they couldn't lay down the salt mixture so some people I know took 2-3 hours to get home on a normal 20 to 30 minute drive. It was crazy! I was so thankful that I got safely home at a normal time.

The snow was so pretty because it was the big, heavy flakes. Best of all, we got a snow day out of it on Friday. The snow is almost all gone now because it was in the 40s yesterday and is supposed to be around 50 today.

Since I was of yesterday, I worked on a new pack after the request of one of my followers. This is my first attempt at a science pack but I'm really proud of how it turned out. I would love to know what you think.  You can check it out by clicking on any of the images below.

Magical Product Swap

It's time for The Magical Product Swap. My swap partner was Jennifer Ross from The Teacher's Cauldron.

I chose to review her Subtraction Sleuths unit. It was perfect for this week because our math unit is a  review of subtracting double digit numbers with regrouping. We spent most of the beginning of the week doing addition and started subtraction on Friday.

My students loved doing the "Read the Room" activity. I posted some regrouping problems around the room. The students walked around the room with their recording sheets and solved the problems. This was a great activity because it became really apparent as to who forgot how to regroup over Christmas break.

I plan on doing most of the other activities this coming week. I have them all copied and ready to go. The "True or False" activity will be great as a math center.  I think I will do the "Flip It" activity as a partner game either with me or in a center.

Go check out Jen's great pack at TPT by clicking on the preview above. It's perfect for all you 2nd grade teachers!

In other news, I have just posted a new pack. It's for my higher reading group to use with "Who Was Abraham Lincoln?" by Janet B. Pascal.

I love these biographies. This one is on a third grade level. My pack has comprehension questions for each chapter plus 9 extension activities.

For my blog followers, I have an anticipation guide and questions from the first chapter for you to use. Click on the image below to download it.

Have a great Sunday!

Congratulations to Ms. O! You won the $25 to Amazon. I will be emailing you ASAP.

I hope you all have had a wonderful weekend. I threw a baby shower for my soon to be born nephew today. It turned out really cute. As you can tell, we had a baseball theme.

My cousin's cupcake shop, Panache Bake Shoppe, made these. They were soooo good. If you are in the Knoxville area, you should check them out.

My beautiful sister-in law and brother

Tomorrow is my first day back to school but at least it's an inservice day. Hope you have a great Monday!

Five for Friday

I'm linking up with the talented Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching for this fun linky party.

(1) This is my last week of winter vacation...Booo! I've been loving lazy days in my pajamas. Here's hoping for some snow days soon!

(2) I went to see Les Miserables on Monday. It was so good! I've seen the musical at least 5 times live and I was afraid the movie would disappoint me. I was really surprised how good it was.

(3) I bought a new couch today and it is so pretty. I also got a rug. They looked too good together. I love decorating my home!

This is close to the couch that I got. The pillows are a little different and the couch has more of a herringbone pattern.
This is the rug I got to go with it. It's really pretty in person..not so much on here. The blue is gorgeous and goes with the little bit of blue on the pillows.

(4)  I've loved reading all the posts for my linky party. I love hearing about new books. Check it out by clicking the image below.

 (5) I've been shopping up a storm for my sister-in-laws baby shower. It's gotten a little bit out of control. I also painted a picture for his nursery. I don't think she reads this so I'll post a picture of it.

His name is on the right side. I'm overly critical of my work so I may play with it some more. I'm not to the point of really liking it yet.

Reading Reponse Unit 4

Happy New Year! I was shocked to read on some blogs that some of you go back to work tomorrow. I'm so sorry. We don't go back until next week but we didn't get off until the Friday before Christmas so I guess it all works out. Anyway, I decided to go ahead and post the reading response prompts for Unit 4 since some of you may need them soon.

Click on the image to download.
This is an image from one of the pages. There are multiple prompts on one page so you can make less copies, chop them apart, and have the students glue in their journals. There are 2 prompts for each Treasures story in Unit 4 and one generic prompt that can be used with any story. My kiddos are having trouble with author's purpose so I included a prompt with that skill which can be used with any book.

If you grab a copy, please leave me a comment and let me know what you think.
