Wrap it Up with Common Core

July 17, 2013

It’s time to introduce you to my newest labor of love. It’s taken me quite a bit of time to finish this one and I’m really proud of how it turned out. The main reason that I came up with this is because I can’t ever remember to have something ready to close my lessons. We have drop in observations and I’m always scrambling trying to think of something to close the lesson. Not a good feeling! Anyway,  I came up with these half sheets that address the Common Core ELA standards for 2nd grade. I’ve included over 100 prepared questions and an editable template for you to create your own questions.

Here’s an example of what the sheets look like.
I’ve also included an editable template for a gradebook or checklist that you can use to assess your students’ answers.
If you prefer another color for the covers, I’ve included a black and white version that you can print on colored paper.
Here’s how I’m organizing my Wrap Ups:
I got a 2 inch binder with a clear view front. I put the title page on the front and the spine inserts on the spine. The spine inserts are easier to insert if you print them on cardstock.
I printed the section headers and put them in my notebook. I used some of that new pretty Scotch tape to show the different sections. You could also use labels or tabs. I’ll probably add tabs later but I didn’t have any at home.
I copied the sheets and put them in clear sheet protectors. I ran off a copy of one to show you how I’m going to organize it. I chopped each page in half. I put the top prompt in the front of the sheet protector and the bottom prompt in the back.
Now I’m partly ready for those drop in observations!

  1. I am so excited that I found your blog. I am a 2nd year (2nd grade) teacher. Although I am excited about the CC, I am really worried about it too. Seeing all of your resources has really helped to put my mind at ease. Thank you for making your hard work available to others.

  3. So… Tell me what you will remember from today's lesson…isn't enough? Drop in observations are coming for us this year too with a new evaluation tool. I love how these are all aligned with CCSS.

  4. These look awesome! My principal has mentioned that a "ticket out the door" is important, and I agree. This is perfect!
    Thank you!

  5. I feel too many teachers leave off the closing of their lesson, yet brain research has shown how important for mastery the closing is. Thank you so much for recognizing this vital concept. Also, thanks for the opportunity to win.

  6. Wow! I shamefully admit to being one of those teachers who doesn't properly close out lessons very often! I am moving up to second grade after 4 years in first grade this upcoming school year and this would be a great companion for me! Thanks for taking the hours upon hours that I imagine it took you to do this!

  7. These look great! I am not as good as I know I should be about exit tickets/time to review the day's learning. I would love to use these which would make me be more intentional. Thank you for being so creative and doing all the work for me!

  8. These look terrific! From a teacher perspective, I love how you tied them to the CC and organized them. From a student perspective, I think they'll love how fast they are to complete. Regardless, they are packed full of formative information for daily teaching while giving me an edge up during those unannounced observations.

  9. This looks like a wonderful resource to have for the common core. As a first year teacher, I'm trying to collect as many resources as I possibly can for the common core. I would love to have this pack. sabaumann02@gmail.com
