Drawing Conclusions (with a freebie)

November 15, 2013
Shew! So glad it’s almost the weekend! Does anybody else think that Thanksgiving can’t get here soon enough? I’m in need of some serious rest.

We have been drawing conclusions this week (which to me is just another way to teach inferring).

One great book that I found to teach drawing conclusions (or inferring) is “Clothesline Clues to Jobs People Do.” I read it to my kiddos on Monday and we used text clues and our prior knowledge to draw conclusions.

To encourage a little creativity, I drew a clothesline on a piece of paper and let my kiddos come up with clues for their future job. These turned out pretty good but we are working on drawing things a little bigger to fit the paper.

This job was a zookeeper. See the cage, timer, obstacle course, treats, X-ray, and shot.

This one was a teacher. I’m not so sure about the hat but I guess the apple, iPad, and pencil go with the job.

This student wants to be an artist. She drew a smock, painting, beret, and paint cups.

I had a hard time guessing this one. He has a suit, sunglasses, and a truck. We talked about him drawing a badge also. He wants to be a secret agent.

We also read “David Goes to School” today. Since this is an easy book for them to read, it helps them use the pictures and words to draw conclusions. Plus some of them have a lot of background knowledge about getting in trouble in school. 🙂

We stopped after every page and added our background knowledge and our conclusions to an anchor chart. (I forgot to take a picture of it today. Sorry!) Basically, our anchor chart was just a large version of the page below with some of the earlier pages listed.

  1. Love the clothesline clues book and activity! (And seriously, I could give some of my students a postage-stamp size paper and they wouldn't be able to fill it!)
