Dive On In (Investigate the Ocean)

May 4, 2014

This week is our state testing. I thought I was fine with it but I’ve had nightmares about it for the past 2 nights. I will be so glad when Thursday is over. The week after testing, I finally, finally, get to do my favorite unit of the year…the ocean! I look forward to this week for the entire year. Not only because I love teaching about the ocean but because it signals that the end is near.

I have so many ocean books that it is hard to fit them into a week. I have been using a hodgepodge of resources for the last few years. This year, I decided to create a unit with the things that I need.  There are 9 different animals focused on in this unit. I try to do a different ocean animal each day but I won’t have the time this year to do 9 days worth.

I created fact sheets that we can use to extend the books I have or in case that you don’t have any books on that ocean creature.

I also made a center featuring each ocean creature so you can keep those kiddos busy learning with an ocean focus.

I made some small books to use during the unit. We will read “One Tiny Turtle” by Nichola Davies and talk about the life cycle of a sea turtle. We will wrap up our unit with the Ocean Creature fact book. I know the kiddos will love keeping this to remember what they have learned.

I will be adding in crafts from A Cupcake from the Teacher. Her crafts are so cute that there was no need for me to make my own.

Amy Lemon also has some great whale freebies that I am going to use.
