Falling for Main Idea

October 14, 2014

Main idea is such a tough skill for second graders. It seems like I can never teach it enough for my students to understand it. I’ve been trying to hit main idea in as many ways as I can and throw in a bit of science or social studies too. Science and social studies have been removed from our daily schedule so I am doing my best to integrate in my lessons.

I’ve been inspired by the changing leaves this weekend and those that have survived all the massive rain that we’ve had this past week. I have this great book called, “Why Do Leaves Change Color?” by
Betsy Maestro. This book is full of facts about leaves and fall.

I decided to use this book to teach a main idea lesson. I made a pack for my mini lesson that you can view on TPT. I’ve included a detailed 3 page lesson plan, main idea and details posters, an anchor chart header, main idea response pages, and a main idea match. Check it out by clicking on the image below.

  1. Would love a chance to win, naturally…second graders have such a hard time with this…mostly because of the way they think! (Like when I ask who has a question and they start off, "Once, my dog…"

My mouth dropped open when you said SS and Science have been removed from your schedule…what???

  2. Second graders can never have enough practice with main idea & details. It's amazing to see just how many things are constantly taken away from kids (ie Science & Social Studies). I may have missed a post about why that's happened to you, but I'd love to know why.

I have been on Fall break yesterday and today and was planning on beginning Main Idea this week.I check your blog daily for new ideas and this is just another example of something I can use!! I am from a small town right outside of Cleveland (south of Knoxville) and I am over all this rain too!!
